Could a Chemical Peel enhance Your Glow?

What every skin tone needs to know before booking a chemical peel at Aegis MD

Not all skin is the same, and neither are chemical peels. That’s why this popular treatment needs to be tailored. To achieve the results of smooth texture, clear breakouts, and faded discoloration, your chemical peel can not be templated.

At Aegis MD in St. Catharines, we specialize in personalized medical aesthetics. Your skin type, tone, and concerns matter. Here’s what you need to know before booking a peel.

Skin Types 101: The Fitzpatrick Scale

Dermatologists use something called the Fitzpatrick Scale to classify skin types. It’s based on how your skin reacts to sun exposure, from always burning (Type I) to never burning (Type VI). And when it comes to peels, where you land on that scale helps determine the safest, most effective approach.

For Lighter Skin Tones (Fitzpatrick I–III)

You’ve got options. In fact, you’ve got the most flexibility when it comes to chemical peels. Lighter skin doesn’t carry as high a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so it’s generally more tolerant of deeper peels. The kind that goes beyond the surface to target scars, lines, and severe sun damage.

For Medium to Deep Skin Tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI)

This is where having an expert provider makes a difference. Darker skin tones have more active melanocytes (pigment-producing cells). That means an aggressive peel can trigger hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation if it’s not chosen and performed correctly. But that doesn’t mean peels are off-limits. You need the right kind and a provider with experience and expertise.

At Aegis MD in St. Catharines, we use a combination of melanin-safe formulations, strategic layering, and prep regimens to minimize risk and maximize glow.

What not to do before your peel:

Regardless of skin tone, there are a few universal rules:

What If I Have Sensitive Skin?

You’re not excluded from the peel club and all of its benefits if you have sensitive skin. However, you’ll want to start ultra-gentle. At Aegis MD, we often recommend enzyme-based exfoliators or very light lactic acid peels to begin with, then build from there. The key is working with your skin’s tolerance, not pushing past it.

There’s a peel for every skin type, but there isn’t one peel for everyone.
