Do You Need Fillers or a Skin Tightening Treatment?
The answer depends on what is actually creating the change you see in the mirror.
Your jawline looks softer. Your cheeks don’t seem quite as lifted. Maybe the lower face feels heavier than it did a few years ago.
It’s easy to assume you need filler. But sometimes adding volume isn’t what the face needs at all.
At Aegis MD, Partner of Dermapure in St. Catharines, one of the most important parts of an aesthetic consultation is determining whether a concern is primarily caused by volume loss, skin laxity, or a combination of both. Once we understand the cause, choosing the right treatment becomes much clearer.
When Dermal Filler Makes Sense
Facial volume naturally changes with age. The cheeks and temples can become less full, while changes in bone and fat can affect the support of the surrounding tissues.
Dermal fillers are designed to restore or enhance volume in carefully selected areas.
You may be more suited to filler if you’ve noticed:
- Flatter or less defined cheeks
- Hollowing around the temples
- Changes in facial proportions
- Loss of chin or jawline definition
- Certain folds becoming more prominent as support decreases
When Skin Tightening May Be the Better Choice
Now consider a different scenario. Your facial volume still looks balanced, but the skin itself feels looser. Perhaps there is early laxity beneath the chin, along the jawline, or around the brow.
Adding filler to loose skin may create unnecessary volume without addressing the underlying concern.
This is where treatments such as Ultherapy can be considered. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen at deeper levels, gradually improving firmness and providing a subtle lifting effect.
For changes in skin quality and collagen, treatments such as Sculptra, hyperdiluted Radiesse, microneedling, or Fraxel may also form part of a personalized plan.
What If You Have Both?
This is where facial aging becomes more interesting. Most people don’t experience volume loss and laxity separately. As the years pass, both can occur at the same time.
In these cases, combining treatments can produce a more balanced result.
A skin tightening treatment may improve firmness first, while a conservative amount of filler can later restore support exactly where it has been lost. This approach avoids trying to use filler as a solution for every concern.
Look Beyond the Wrinkle
A line or fold doesn’t always tell us what treatment it needs. For example, a deeper fold in the lower face might be influenced by cheek volume loss, changes in skin elasticity, or both. Simply filling the line may not create the most natural outcome. Good aesthetic planning means looking at the entire face rather than treating individual areas in isolation.
The Right Treatment Starts With the Right Diagnosis
You don’t need to know whether you need filler or skin tightening before walking into your consultation. That’s what the assessment is for. At Aegis MD, Partner of Dermapure medical aesthetics clinic in Niagara, we evaluate facial structure, skin quality, collagen loss, and your personal goals before recommending treatment.
Sometimes filler is exactly what’s needed. Sometimes tightening the skin makes more sense. And sometimes the most natural result comes from thoughtfully combining both.
